Profile

Hajime HASEGAWA,Ph.D, is a professor at the performing arts and media course, the department of art studies, faculty of literature, Meijigakuin University, Tokyo, Japan.

He was born in Nagoya-city, Aichi prefecture in Japan, 1966, and is a 1990 graduate of the Chiba University, Chiba in Japan.  His Ph.D and M.A. in Media Studies is from the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies, the University of Tokyo, after fifteen years of his career as an editor working for two publishing houses, Shobunsha Publisher Inc. and then the University of Tokyo Press.

Now his research and critique are focused on various aspects of the relationship between technologies and bodies in the digital media culture of postmodern Japan. He has published many of his achievements including several books;

  • “How to Talk About Hope in the Disneylandized Society: Playgames with Technologies and Bodies” (Keio University Press, 2014),
  • “Everyday Life of Attraction: Dancing Machines with Bodies” (Kawadeshoboshinsya, 2009),
  • “Humanities and Publishing in the Digital Age” (Misuzushobo, 2003),
  • “Media Literacy Workshop” (S. Mizukoshi & MELL Project eds., The University of Tokyo Press, 2009),
  • “An Toolbox for Media Literacy” (MELL Project & NAB-Japan eds., The University of Tokyo Press, 2005),
  • “Media Practice” (S. Mizukoshi & S. Yoshimi eds., Sericashobo, 2003),

etc. (each publication is in Japanese).

Professor HASEGAWA has been run workshops of the digital storytelling and others in recent years.

He is also the winner of the 2004 award of the Japan Association for Publishing Studies.
